The First Year Benchmarking Survey is built around 15 research questions which are supported by the research literature on retention, good practices in undergraduate instruction and student learning, human development theory, and learning theory:
- Are FYS (First-Year Seminar) students using “good practices” in studying and academic work?
- Are FYS students engaged in their classroom experiences?
- Do FYS students have comfortable and meaningful relationships with faculty and staff?
- Do FYS students report gains/competency in academic abilities (writing, computing, reading, and critical thinking)?
- Do FYS students have sound academic plans?
- Do FYS students use time management strategies?
- Do FYS students use campus resources such as advising, counseling, financial aid, etc.?
- Do FYS students have comfortable and helpful relationships with peers?
- Are FYS students involved in the co-curricular life of the campus?
- Are FYS students aware of their strengths and weaknesses?
- Do FYS student manage their lives to maintain wellness and happiness?
- Are FYS students comfortable interacting with people of different races/cultures?
- Are FYS students satisfied with your seminar/program?
