Since its launch in 1999, the Gardner Institute (formerly Policy Center on the First Year of College) has produced publications relevant to the first year of college and has engaged in a number of research projects.

RESEARCH

From 1999 – 2005, the Policy Center engaged in the following research initiatives to help build a body of knowledge about first-year students and institutional practices in the first year.

Your First College Year (YFCY).  A survey developed in collaboration with the Higher Education Research Institute at UCLA to serve as an end-of-year assessment of new student experiences and perceptions. This survey is now available through the Higher Education Research Institute.

First-Year Initiative (FYI). Working with Educational Benchmarking, Inc., the Policy Center developed the FYI benchmarking survey to evaluate and compare student perceptions and learning in first-year seminars. This survey is now available through Educational Benchmarking, Inc.

Institutions of Excellence . The Policy Center undertook this study of institutional excellence in the first year in 2002. Study results are available in the 2005 Jossey-Bass book, Achieving and Sustaining Institutional Excellence for The First Year of College

National Surveys of First-Year Practices . In 2000 and 2002, the Policy Center conducted national surveys of first-year practices.
