Greg Lampe

Greg Lampe is currently serving as the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs for the University of Wisconsin Colleges, the freshman and sophomore institution of the University of Wisconsin System. He has been serving the UW Colleges in this capacity since July 2000. From July 2003 through December 2005, he served as the Interim Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. Prior to coming to the UW Colleges’ Central Office in Madison, he was an Associate Professor in the Department of Communication and Theatre Arts at the UW-Rock County campus in Janesville. In 2004, Greg was promoted to full professor.

Greg began his career with the UW Colleges at the Marshfield/Wood County campus in 1983. Prior to becoming a faculty member at the UW Colleges, Greg taught at the UW-La Crosse in the Speech and Theatre Department for five years. Born in New Rochelle, New York, he received his bachelor’s degree from Slippery Rock University, Pennsylvania (1976), his master’s degree from Northern Illinois University, DeKalb (1978), and his doctorate degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (1995).

Greg has been recognized for his work as both a scholar and a teacher.  His first book, Frederick Douglass: Freedom’s Voice, 1818-1845, was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize (1998).  He has also received a number of teaching awards, including the Wisconsin Power and Light Underkofler Excellence in Teaching Award (1996) and the George and Mavis Steil Excellence in Teaching Award (1999). In 2002, he received the Wisconsin Association of Extension 4-H Youth Development Professionals 2002 Training Methods Award for developing the Building Bridges: Reaching People through Communication curriculum.

In his free time, Greg enjoys reading, corresponding with friends and family, walking, biking, playing slow-pitch softball, playing volleyball, and going cross country and downhill skiing. For fun, he plays the piano and guitar (not at the same time), and spends time with family and friends.
